Maysville, NC is a small town in Jones County south of New Bern (listed in 2008 as having a population of 959). It was quiet as I passed through town, I didn’t see anyone walking around – and there was a sense of struggle about the place, with many of the stores along the short Main Street empty. I wondered about folks who lived there, what they did, and when I see Main Streets like this – I always wish I had images from the past, when the stores were more vibrant.
Maysville sits on the edge of the Croatan National Forest – 160,000 acres of pine forests, saltwater estuaries, bogs and raised swamps – and one of four National forests in North Carolina. It’s on my list of places to spend a bit of time in during my next trip down Highway 17 – here’s a map of the place.
