9462 James Madison Highway (Highway 17 South/Rt. 15 South/Rt. 29 South)
Warrenton, Virginia 20186
I imagine at one point in time, that the Johnson’s Motel and the Fauquier Motel were convenient stopping points for those traveling along this historic stretch of Highway 17 known as the James Madison Highway. The curtains are mostly drawn now – and ‘RESTAURANT’ has been removed from the lower section of the motel sign – but these old motels sure speak volumes of a different time, and of different roads that we traveled down.
Below is a postcard from the Fauquier Motel that I found on Vintage Travel Postcards – an image of the place when it was new, with a freshly grated drive leading up to the place. Further below are images taken last weekend of the three signs that sit along Highway 17 South that speak of transitions: one advertising that the place has ‘Color TV’ and that truckers were welcome, a once-neon vacancy sign that tells you where to enter, and the newest of the three, a Coca-Cola sign. I’m sure that each of these signs represents a unique period of time for this place, and each has their own story to tell.
