In early November of last year, I spent a gorgeous late Autumn day driving along Highway 17 North in the Crooked Run Valley Rural Historic District near Delaplane, Virginia – and I couldn’t resist stopping at Delaplane Cellars to taste their wines. Delaplane Cellars has lovely views of the valley and the Cobbler Mountains in the distance – and I can’t imagine a nicer spot to spend a bit of time on a beautiful afternoon.

Here’s a bit about their wine-making philosophy from their website:

All of our wines are made from authentic Virginia winegrapes. Our goal is to craft delicious single vineyard wines that reflect the unique terroir of each vineyard site. To accomplish this, our winemaking philosophy is simply that less is more. Less intervention by the winemaker results in more authentic flavour and more memorable wine in the bottle.

I walked away with two bottles – the 2009 Williams Gap (a blend of 4 of the 5 Bordeaux varietals – 40% Cab Franc, 27% Merlot, 22% Cab Sauv, 11% Petit Verdot) and the 2009 Springlot. You can see a list of their available wines here on their website.
